He’ll leave the light on for you
“We’ll leave the light on for you” was the slogan I recall from the 1980’s, letting travelers know that you always have a place to rest your head in the night at Motel 6. A lighthouse sits on the shore as a beacon to the ships at sea making captains aware of the shores where land and water collide. The sunrise and the sunset are equally spectacular as they usher in dark and light with their magnificent color.
Although believers celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25, the date itself actually evolved from pagan traditions in which they celebrated the winter solstice. Pagan tradition celebrated the season where the days lengthen and slowly, each day, overcome darkness with light.
I love that we celebrate the winter solstice and Christ’s birthday together! They both signify light that overcomes darkness. We are dependent on the sunlight for growing plants, sustaining life, and showering us with Vitamin D. Just as Christ also sustains our lives, He truly offers us so much more through His very existence! He is the light that guides us, shelters us, and shares with us everlasting life!
He is our beacon, our guiding light according to John 8:12, saying “Again Jesus spoke to them saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life!’”
So may we be reminded on this big birthday celebration that Jesus is the gift that helps us find rest in the darkness; helps us see the shore when we are drifting at sea; and lights the path when we’ve lost our way.
We don't have to wander or wonder when we have Christ. And we can always trust that He’ll leave the light on!
